Crime Investigation

Crime Investigation is headed up by Chief Superintendent Geoff Ronayne

The investigation of crime is a specialist area of police work and Gwent Police has a dedicated Criminal Investigation department.

Crime Investigation tackles a wide range of crimes including burglary and car crime to very serious offences like the supply of controlled drugs, murder and terrorism.

Scientific Support

Scientific Support is separated into the following departments:

  • Fingerprint Bureau
  • Crime Scene Investigation
  • DNA
  • Photography
  • Fingerprint Enhancement

The duties of the departments are wide-ranging and varied. DNA, fingerprint, shoeprint, fibre and tool mark identifications provided are invaluable for investigating officers.

Together, the individual departments provide full scientific support to crime investigation.

Training is also provided to operational officers of all ranks. Informal tours and talks are given to visiting VIP's. In addition to operational duties the photography/fingerprint enhancement laboratory provides Public Relations photography for the whole force.

Protecting Vulnerable People

Providing expertise and inter-agency liaison in areas of domestic violence, child protection, vulnerable adults and dangerous offender profiles.

Organised Crime Unit

The Organised Crime Unit tackle all aspects of serious and organised crime within Gwent. The unit comprises the following specialised teams.

Drug squad, Organised Vehicle Crime, Fraud, Financial Crime, Surveillance, Technical Support Unit

Special Branch

Special branch provide assistance and expertise in areas of domestic and international terrorism, immigration and registration of foreign nationals.

Intelligence

The primary purpose of the department is to provide senior managers in the force with up-to date intelligence on crime, disorder and other problems that impact on policing in Gwent, at a strategic and tactical level.

Major Incident Team

The Major Incident Teams’ primary responsibility is the investigation of murder and manslaughter within the force area.

Serious Sexual and Violent Crime Teams

The Serious Sexual and Violent Crime teams provide a dedicated response to the most serious sexual and violent crimes across Gwent. Specially trained officers working with support and partner agencies ensure that victims receive the best possible service following traumatic incidents of violence and sexual assault. In addition dedicated detectives investigate these offences to bring those responsible to justice as soon as possible.

All officers start their police career in uniform, but those who are particularly interested in the investigation of crime, and demonstrate an aptitude for it, can choose to specialise in criminal investigation work.

Officers working in crime investigation have the title ‘detective’ added in front of their rank.
