Special Constable

Making a difference

Today's 'Specials' come from all age groups and walks of life. Serving alongside 'Regulars' in all kinds of situations, from giving 'drug avoidance' presentations in schools, to routine patrol duties, crime prevention initiatives, house searches, drug raids, as well as policing major events, they are valuable and respected members of the community and Gwent Police.

With the same uniform, equipment and powers of arrest as our 'Regular' colleagues, Specials are trained in law, recording and presentation of evidence, powers of arrest, rights of suspects, self-defence and use of force, along the same lines as a 'Regular'.

A service with history

Special Constables have served the community for many years providing a reserve in support of the 'Regular' Police. In the early days, about 150 years ago, they were ill equipped, had little or no training and even less respect!

Personal developemnt

'Specials' develop self-confidence through training in, and use of, communication skills, problem solving and planning, conflict resolution and incident evaluation. That developing confidence and initiative brings benefits to the individual and his or her employer. Promotion or improved employment prospects can be a welcome personal benefit from this public-spirited service.

You can make a real difference by giving a little time to society, and experience great satisfaction from making your community just a little safer.

I hope that my enthusiasm will tempt you to find out more about this essential, challenging, highly valued and very 'different' volunteer service.
