As a witness in a criminal prosecution, you or your family will deal with many different people before the case comes to court. There are many questions you may want to ask. You can contact the witness support unit on any of the following numbers to obtain advice:

Witness Support Unit staff will:

  • Help you understand how the courts and legal system work.
  • Arrange for someone to assist you the the court day.
  • Inform the Crown Prosecution Service of any special needs you may have, and ensure these are met.
  • Tell you how to claim witness expenses.
  • Address any concerns you may have.
  • Update you regularly regarding the progress of the case and tell you the result, including details of any sentence.
  • Update you regularly regarding the defendant's bail conditions (if any).
  • Offer to arrange to show you the courts and facilities for witnesses.

We will tell you about:

  • Charges against the defendant, and any later changes to the charge (if the original charge is changes to a lesser one, we will tell you the reasons why, or put you in touch with a Crown Prosecution lawyer who can explain directly).
  • The reasons why a person was not charged, or the case not proceeded with.
