Anti-social Behaviour
What can Gwent police and other authorities do?
By working with our partners, such as the local councils, community safety partnerships and housing authorities, there are a number of activities that can be undertaken where appropriate, to try and tackle anti-social behaviour. The police will not necessarily take the lead on all of these; some may be led by the local council or housing authority. Some of the tactics available include:
- Increased patrols by neighbourhood officers, and in some areas community safety wardens, in areas affected by anti-social behaviour
- Fines or ‘fixed penalties’
- Warning letters
- Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (ASBO’s) and Acceptable Behaviour Contracts (ABC’s)
- Speaking to parents about the behaviour of their child
- Seizing vehicles
- Dispersal orders to ensure that those congregating are moved on
- Injunctions
- Arresting those responsible
- Educating young people about the consequences of anti-social behaviour via the School Liaison programme delivered by (local) school liaison police officers
- Enforcing tenancy agreements and carrying out evictions
- Test purchasing to detect underage sales of alcohol or tobacco
- Noise abatement notices to reduce noise pollution
- Sessions to improve parenting skills
