Gwent Police Authority
Gwent Police Authority sets the strategic direction for the force and holds the Chief Constable to account on behalf of the local community for the policing service delivered. Delivering operational policing services is the job of the Chief Constable.
In addition, the police authority:
- Holds the police budget and allocates resources
- Appoints (and dismisses) the Chief Constable and senior police officers
- Consults widely with local people about the policing in their area
- Sets local policing priorities and targets for achievement
- Monitors everything the police do and how well they perform against the targets set by the authority
- Publishes an annual plan which tells people what they can expect from their police service and reports progress back at the end of the year
- Makes sure local people get best value from their local police
- Oversees complaints against the police and disciplines senior officers.
Gwent Police Authority is an independent body of 17 Members including 9 councillors and 8 independent Members.
The most recent monitoring data (as at 1st October 2011) identifies that:
- 88% of police authority Members are male (15 in number) with 12% female (2 in number)
- 6% of Members are from a visible minority ethnic background (1 person)
- 6% of Members have a registered disability (1 person)
- Just under half of police authority Members are aged over 65 years.
- Faiths other than Christian are represented on the police authority
- There is representation on the police authority from the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual community.
The police authority is supported by a small secretariat of staff led by the Chief Executive. There are 8 members of staff (7 full-time equivalents).
The most recent monitoring data (as at 1st October 2011) identifies that:
- 75% of police authority staff are female (6 in number) with 25% male (2 in number)
- There is no representation from visible minority ethnic backgrounds
- There are no members of staff with registered disability
- A greater proportion of police authority staff are aged between 45 and 64 years
- Faiths other than Christian are represented within the secretariat
- There is no declared representation from the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual community within the secretariat.
