We are urging owners of vehicles in Newport East to take appropriate steps to keep their property safe, following a number of recent thefts in the area.
Officers are currently investigating incidents in the Maindee and Alway wards, where offenders have targeted parked and unattended vehicles, stealing registration plates and items from within.
Pc Leanne Pole, of the Newport East Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "It is clear that a number of these thefts are opportunistic, in that the vehicles were left unlocked on driveways. Whilst we are continuing to investigate, we would like to remind drivers to be vigilant and take all necessary precautions to protect themselves from crime. Do not make yourself vulnerable to this type of offence."
Thefts have been reported in numerous locations in recent weeks, including Merlin Crescent, Caerleon Road, Constable Drive, Catsash Road, Elgar Circle, Cot Hill, Orb Drive, Seabreeze Avenue, Lysaght Gardens, Tantallus Way, Clarke Road, Llanwern Road and Aberthaw Road.
Drivers are encouraged to remove valuable items from sight, or from the vehicle, when not in use, and wherever possible, to park and leave cars in well-lit areas, covered by CCTV.
Pc Pole added: "I would also like to urge anyone who feels they have been a victim of this sort of crime to report this to us immediately so we can carry out enquiries as soon as possible, in an effort to identify those responsible."
