Update: Cyclist seriously injured on Malpas Road, Newport

At approximately 17.15pm this evening (Sunday 31st May 2020), officers responded to a report of an injured cyclist, that was found on Malpas Road, southbound, between Bettws traffic lights and the fire station.

The cyclist, a man in his forties, has been taken to the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff with serious injuries and remains in a critical condition.

The road remains closed and diversions are in place which will cause congestion.

Officers are now trying to establish the circumstances of this incident and are requesting any motorists using the road around this time to please check any dash cam footage that may provide further information that will assist officers with their enquiries.

At this moment, we believe that they was more than once person on the bike around the time of the accident.

We are particularly interested in speaking to the driver of a yellow hatchback type vehicle that was in the area at that time – we believe they may be able to help us with our enquiries.

Anyone with any information or anyone who may have witnessed the incident is urged to contact Gwent Police on 101 or Direct Message us on Facebook or Twitter, quoting log 397 31/05/20
