Modern Slavery
Slavery in Britain is on the rise. In 2016, 3905 potential victims were identified; a 17% increase on 2015. Slavery is the movement of a person from one place to another, within a country or across borders, into conditions of exploitation against their will.
Signs of slavery
Due to the hidden nature of slavery and their reluctance or inability to seek help, you may not realise you've come into contact with a victim. Some of the signs to look out for include:
- limited family contact
- physical abuse/ appearing malnourished
- distrust of authority
- having no friends
- acting as if under another's control
- disorientation
- avoiding eye contact
- unable to speak any English
Types of slavery
Men, women and children may be forced into various types of slavery, including:
- forced prostitution/sexual exploitation
- child trafficking and exploitation
- criminal exploitation
- domestic / forced labour
- organ harvesting
- cyber slavery
