Special Inspector Esther McLaughlin

Your latest Blog from your West Special Inspector, Esther McLaughlin, who covers the Caerphilly, Torfaen & Blaenau Gwent areas

We’ve had a busy few months in the Special Constabulary here in Gwent.

Firstly I would like to welcome 17 new Special Constables to the Gwent Police family. This group of officers have spent several months in the classroom, and are now ready to hit the streets and start the operational phase of their training. This phase will see them go out with experienced officers who will mentor them, and put into practice what they have learned so far. They will be deployed across the force, with 10 coming to the West, in Blackwood, Bargoed, Tredegar, and Pontypool.

Many of these new Police Officers are studying Police Sciences at the University of South Wales. We have strong links to the University, and the knowledge that these officers bring with them from their studies has impressed us all. Time now to put it in to practice, and to put in the hard work required of them to get them up to full operational competence. We expect a lot from our Special Constables, and I am looking forward to seeing this new group grow into their roles.

SC Luke Shepherd is one of our new officers, who has come to us from the Gwent Police Cadet programme. The dedication and positivity he has shown as a Police Cadet has been outstanding, and has helped him progress with confidence into the Special Constabulary. The cadets are currently recruiting young people aged 14-18 years old, have a listen to SC Shepherd here talking about his experience as a cadet:

This time of year is always busy for the emergency services, as we have Halloween and Bonfire night just around the corner. As a Specials team we are deploying officers across the force area to boost officer numbers on these dates, as well as beginning to plan ahead for the Christmas season.

Being a Special Constable takes a lot of dedication. Thank you to my team who are planning to spend time away from family and friends during the holiday season to serve their communities.
