Arrest in connection with Newport arson investigation

Newport officers investigating a series of deliberate fires in the Shaftesbury area have made an arrest.

A 20-year-old man from Newport has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Eight deliberate fires have been reported between August 2019 and January 2020 in the Shaftesbury area of Newport. No injuries have been reported.

Chief Inspector Rob Jenkins said: “We are working closely with our colleagues in South Wales Fire and Rescue Service to tackle this issue. We have increased high-visibility patrols in the area and this will continue.
