Be kind to your mental health

Gwent Police shines the light on community kindness for Mental Health Awareness Week.

We’re encouraging communities to check in on themselves, their family and friends and reflect on how acts of kindness can have a positive effect on our mental wellbeing.

Held between 18th – 24th May, Mental Health Awareness Week provides an opportunity to raise awareness of mental health issues and advocate against the social stigmas surrounding mental ill-health. This year’s theme is kindness. 

Chief Constable Pam Kelly said:

"This has been a difficult time, and a time where many in our communities have felt alone and isolated.

"But, I also believe that the health crisis has brought out the best in a lot of people. The acts of kindness to our officers, for instance, and the continued support for key workers has highlighted a shared community spirit in Gwent that has helped lift spirits throughout the pandemic. 

“All I ask this Mental Health Awareness Week is for us to continue to look out for those in our society who are struggling, let them know they are not alone, that help is there for them, and think on how your kindness could positively impact their health and wellbeing.

“If you believe a friend is feeling isolated, reach out and offer support through virtual catch-ups and phone calls, and let them know there are services out there for them if they need help. 

“No one should feel alone.”

Looking after our mental health should be as natural as looking after our physical health, which is why Oscar Kilo, the home of the National Police Wellbeing Service, suggest taking to time to look after yourself by: trying a breathing exercise or a mindfulness session, taking up a new hobby, reading a book, taking some exercise or resting.

We are also urging people to look out for signs of mental ill-health in others and reflect on the acts of kindness that have helped you through difficult times.
