Stop, challenge, protect – take five to help stop fraud and scams

Gwent Police has been notified that members of the public have received automated calls from people claiming to be from HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs).

These calls invite the receiver to return the call by pressing ‘1’ on their phone, connecting the person dialling to a call handler.

The call handler claims that the person returning the call owes money and that failure to provide financial details or immediately repayment will result in arrest or property being seized.

The fraudsters may also claim to be police officers working with HMRC and can clone the phone number from a station, often near to the person they are targeting. This is a pressure tactic used by scammers to aid compliance.

It is important to give yourself time to consider the request – stop, challenge, protect.

Always talk to someone trustworthy before responding and be confident to refuse sudden demands for personal information.

Gwent Police is reminding people that HMRC will never send an email, text message or phone call which:

  • tells you about a tax rebate or penalty,
  • asks for your personal or payment information.
