Warning over summer burglaries in Newport

Newport residents are being urged to keep their homes secure in the hot weather, following an increase in reported burglaries over the past week.

Offences have been recorded across the city, and officers believe unsecured windows and doors could be to blame.

Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Wilkie said: "In this hot weather we recognise that many residents will have their windows and doors open. While this is understandable, as households try to stay cool, we would urge members of the public not to leave these unattended.

"If you are in your garden make sure that windows and doors at the front of the house are secure, or if you go out, please make sure that they are all closed and secure. Sadly, it only takes an opportunist thief seconds to access your home through an open window.

"Also, if you see anyone acting suspiciously please call us."

Anyone with information or concerns about burglaries in Newport can call Gwent Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
