Which route will you choose?
The Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) is a 3-year professional degree apprenticeship. Upon completion, successful candidates will achieve a Degree in Professional Policing Practice.
To apply for the PCDA entrants must have achieved a Level 3 qualification (A level or equivalent) or have successfully completed the online competency based assessment. The force covers all fees relating to this entry route.
The Degree Holder Entry Programme (DHEP) is for those who already hold a degree in any subject area. This is a two-year academic and practice-based programme. Upon completion, successful candidates will also achieve a Diploma in Professional Policing Practice. The force covers all fees relating to this entry route.
The Pre-join Degree in Professional Policing Practice is for those who choose to complete the degree at a Higher Education Institution of their choosing, at their own cost. Candidates recruited via this route will also undertake academic and practice based training to develop specific skills, assessed against national assessment criteria and operational competence.

To apply for the role of police constable, you will need to:
- Be aged 18 years or over (on the day you submit your application).
- Applicants should be British Citizens, or passport holders from a full EU Member State. You can also apply if you're a Commonwealth citizen or foreign national who is resident in the UK with indefinite leave to remain.
- You must have lived in the UK for three continuous years, immediately prior to application.
- Have achieved a standard of education equivalent to Level 3 for the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (or be able to evidence via assessment that you are capable of achieving this), or a Degree, for the Degree Holder Entry Scheme.
- Not be a member of the British National Party (BNP) plus other organisations such as Combat 18 or The National Front.
- If you have a criminal record, this doesn't mean you're automatically ineligible; it depends on the nature of your conviction. Please declare any caution or conviction on your application form, failure to do so will result in failing vetting due to integrity issues.
- You must not be registered bankrupt with outstanding debts, have outstanding County Court Judgements against you, or be subject to a current Individual Voluntary Agreement (IVA).
- Tattoos which are offensive, garish, prominent or numerous are not acceptable. Please supply photos and measurements of any tattoos along with your application, as per application guidance.
- You must hold a full manual driving licence prior to commencing with Gwent Police.
- You may only apply to one Police force at a time.

There are a number of stages to the application process:
- First step will be an on-line application process which entails some eligibility ‘killer questions’, if you pass this stage you will be required to complete several on-line tests and an application form. These tests will include an online Situational Judgement Test and Behavioural Style Questionnaire.
- If you do not have a Level 3 qualification or above you must also successfully pass a psychometric test (Verbal Reasoning and Calculation Test). This will test your academic ability to Level 3.
- All Test results are provided instantly online.
- You will be required to attend the National Day 1 Assessment Centre.
- Further to your Day 1 Assessment Centre, there are various in force stages you will also be required to successfully complete:
- In force Interview
- This will allow the panel to gain a better understanding into your experience and skills, as well as for you to gain a further understanding into the role.
- Fitness Test
- You will be required to meet the national standards for Police Officers, this involves a Shuttle run to level 5/4 (Bleep test).
- If you don’t meet the standard first time around, you can take the test again up to a maximum of three times. You will also be required to attend a pre-appointment fitness test approximately 6 weeks prior to the anticipated appointment date and you must pass this to progress your application.
- Drugs and Biometric Testing
- The drugs test will involve undergoing a questionnaire regarding any medication you may have or are taking, and a hair sample.
- Biometric Testing will involve taking of fingerprints and a DNA (mouth) swab, which will be checked against a national database.
- Vetting and References
- References are required to cover a minimum of 3 years continuous employment history. If you have not been in employment for 3 years we will look in addition to obtain education and personal references.
- Health Check Questionnaire, and Appointment
- This will include various tests, including Hearing, Vision, Audio, Spirometry, Reflexes and BMI. The Home Office sets BMI standards for police officers. The current Home Office circular 59/2004 outlines this as between 18 and 30.
- In force Interview
- These pre-appointment checks can sometimes take between three and six months. Please be aware that you must attend any appointments in your own time, including your uniform fitting appointment.
- Once you have completed all pre-employment checks, you'll be allocated a place on the next available intake, and allocated a uniform fitting appointment.
- The first year of police training will be classroom based. Police officers and police staff trainers will deliver the course at a police-training establishment.
- This is a non-residential course designed to help maximise learning potential both academically and practically and start developing operational policing skills.
- The classroom syllabus is based on the curriculum developed by the College of Policing, which covers all areas required for the role of a Police Constable. Various E-learning packages alongside fitness, first aid and personal safety training will also be undertaken.
- At various stages of the course, student constables will need to demonstrate their understanding and knowledge through informal and formal assessment processes. This will include multiple choice examinations, assignments and practical assessments.
- Student constables are always expected to display the appropriate behaviour and attitude during their training in line with the police service’s Code of Ethics.
- Following the successful completion of year one-student officers will commence a period of tutoring at an operational police station with a qualified tutor. Successful completion of the tutor phase will allow student constables to be placed on independent patrol.
- In years two and three, whilst working in an operational environment, student constables on the apprenticeship will be working towards achieving a degree in Professional Policing Practise whilst Degree holder student constables will be working towards achieving a Graduate Certificate in Professional Policing.
- Students on both programmes will be required to complete an occupational competency portfolio during their probationary periods, and they will be required to complete work outside training hours.
