We received a report of a road traffic collision on the A465, heading west, between Rhymney and Dowlais at around 6.30pm on Tuesday 12 September.
Officers attended, along with personnel from the Welsh Ambulance Service, Air Ambulance Service and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service.
The collision involved one car – a white Fiat Tipo.
The driver, a 79-year-old man, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
Officers investigating the collision want to speak to any motorists who were travelling on the A465 between 6pm and 6.30pm on Tuesday 12 September or anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage to contact us.
