We were called to an address in Rhoslan, Tredegar, at around 5.40am on Thursday 13 February following reports of a suspected arson.
Officers attended along with firefighters from the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, who confirmed that the fire was deliberately started.
A 40-year-old man from the Tredegar area was arrested on suspicion of arson, but upon reviewing evidence, he was further arrested for arson with intent to endanger life and criminal damage.
He was later charged with arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered and criminal damage and remanded into custody at Newport Magistrates’ Court on Saturday 15 February.
