A prolific Newport shoplifter, who targeted businesses in the city, has been sentenced to more than nine months' imprisonment and handed a two-year criminal behaviour order (CBO).
Jamie Westacott, 36, was sentenced to 38 weeks' imprisonment for multiple theft offences and issued with the CBO at Newport Magistrates' Court on Saturday 21 December.
Westacott has been banned from entering, among others, Newport's Harlech Retail Park, the Spar in Bassaleg Road and Heron Foods in Cardiff Road until 21 December 2026.
PC Claire Drayton, Crime and Disorder Reduction Officer (CADRO) from the Newport neighbourhood policing team of Gwent Police, said:
“Theft, and particularly shoplifting, is not a victimless crime; the impact of Westacott's offending has been felt by our communities, notably businesses and retailers.
“I’ve worked closely with our partners in securing this two-year CBO – and it is a major achievement for everyone involved, particularly in the lead up to the festive period.
"Westacott's chaotic lifestyle has led to his offending, and we know this sentence and CBO will be welcomed by those businesses affected by his shoplifting and local residents; he will also receive support to help him change his behaviour."
The conditions of the CBO state that Westacott must not enter:
1) Spar Bassaleg Road, Newport
2) Harlech Retail Park, Cardiff Road, Newport
3) 28 East Retail Park, Newport
4) Heron Foods, Cardiff Road, Newport
5) Londis Stores, St John’s Crescent, Newport.
Westacott must also leave any retail/business premises in the city of Newport when asked to do so by a member of staff.
If Westacott breaches any of the conditions above, he will be committing a criminal offence and could face arrest and, if found guilty, may be fined, sentenced to imprisonment, or both.
If you see Westacott breaching this order, please contact Gwent Police via our website, call 101, or direct message us on Facebook or X.
