Gareth Chapman joined the Gwent Special Constabulary in 1977 and despite a 6 year break from 1988 until 1994 (to undertake his professional training) he has continued to serve the communities of Gwent throughout this period.
Gareth has always been a passionate supporter of the role of a Special Constable and the skills, knowledge and experience that individuals holding this voluntary role bring to the Police family.
Gareth has served at Newport Central, Rogerstone, Alway, Maindee, Cwmbran and Headquarters throughout his career and was fortunate to be selected as one of the first neighbourhood special constables covering Rogerstone in the early 1980’s.
Gareth took up the role of Chief Officer of the Special Constabulary in June 2017.
Gareth is currently employed as the Chief Executive of a Unitary Authority and has been a local government officer for 40 years.
Gareth holds two Masters Degrees one in Law and one in Business Administration, he is a Chartered Manager, a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute and a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Judicature. Gareth is also Gold Command trained for Major Incidents.
For his services to volunteering he was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant for the County of South Glamorgan in 2007.
Gareth is also a Director of the College Merthyr Tydfil and a Trustee of St John Wales.
Gareth spends his spare time with his family.
