2022/24790 - Overnight detention of children

REQUEST

Please find attached Freedom of Information request on the overnight detention of children for the period from 1st January 2021 to 31st January 2021. Please note that we are especially interested in a response to questions: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23. Where possible, we would also be grateful also for a response to questions 1 and 24.

We acknowledge the difficulty in retrieving some of the requested data, for example in relation to questions: 7, 8, 12, 13, 15 and 16. We also acknowledge that it may not be possible to provide a breakdown by age, sex, ethnic origin, national origin, type of disability and type of crime within set cost limits. We are especially interested in a breakdown by age, sex and ethnic and/or national origin in relation to question 2 on the total number of children who are detained in police custody each year.

Please provide us with the following information in relation to your police force for the year 2020 (from 1st January 2021 to 31st December 2021):

  1. How does your police force define overnight detention of a child in police custody? If possible, please provide what time does overnight detention begins and ends, and if there is a required minimum number of hours of detention according to your definition?

 

  1. How many children (those under 18 at the time of detention) were detained overnight (for 4 or more hours between the hours of 0000 and 0800) in police custody? If possible, please provide a breakdown of these children by their age, sex, ethnic origin, national origin, type of disability and type of crime.

Arrest warrants

  1. How many children were detained overnight in police custody following an arrest warrant being issued by a court? If possible, please provide a breakdown of these children by their age, sex, ethnic origin, national origin, type of disability and type of crime.

 

  1. Can you provide details of the detention period for those children detained overnight in police custody following an arrest warrant being issued by a court (Question 3)? If possible, please provide the day of the week at the time of arrest, how long they were detained for, and during which hours of the day.

Pre-charge detention

  1. How many children detained overnight in police custody were detained pre-charge? If possible, please provide a breakdown of these children by their age, sex, ethnic origin, national origin, type of disability and type of crime.
