2022/25007 - Drug driving data

REQUEST

In line with FOI legislation, can I please request the following information that you may hold for your policing area:

 

  1. Number of arrests for S4 (1) (2) RTA 88 (Driving or attempting to drive or in charge of a motor vehicle, whilst unfit through drink or drugs).

 

  1. Number of persons charged for S4 (1) and (2) RTA 88.

 

  1. Number of arrests for S5a RTA 88 (Driving or attempting to drive or in charge of a motor vehicle with a specified controlled drug in the blood or urine in excess of the specified limit for that drug).

 

  1. Number of persons charged for S5a RTA 88.

 

This is for the period from 01.01.21 to 31.12.21 broken down by month.

 

RESPONSE

In line with FOI legislation, can I please request the following information that you may hold for your policing area:

 

Please note that charge disposals can be added any time after the arrest and that some arrests may still be under investigation – these figures are accurate as of the 1st of March 2022. Please also note that the arrest figures are based on footfall, meaning the number of custody records for each of the offences. If someone was arrested for multiple offences in each category they will only be counted once. If arrested for the same offence separate times they will be counted each time they came to custody. Charges are based on the number of custody records for the specific offences that received a charge disposal.

 

  1. Number of arrests for S4 (1) (2) RTA 88 (Driving or attempting to drive or in charge of a motor vehicle, whilst unfit through drink or drugs).

 

  1. Number of persons charged for S4 (1) and (2) RTA 88.

The table above provides information on the number of arrests and charges for drink driving in 2021. The drink driving offences that are included in the table are:

           

  • Drive motor vehicle when alcohol level above limit.
  • Drive whilst unfit through drink.
  • Attempt to drive motor vehicle – alcohol level above limit.
  • Drive a vehicle whilst drunk/ under the influence of drink/ drugs/ other intoxicating substances at Bristol Airport.
  • Attempt to drive motor vehicle whilst unfit through drink.

 

 

  1. Number of arrests for S5a RTA 88 (Driving or attempting to drive or in charge of a motor vehicle with a specified controlled drug in the blood or urine in excess of the specified limit for that drug).

 

4.  Number of persons charged for S5a RTA 88

The table above provides information on the number of arrests and charges for drug driving in 2021. The drug driving offences that are included in the table are:

           

  • Drive motor vehicle with a proportion of a specified controlled drug above the specified limit.
  • Drive a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs.
  • Attempt to drive vehicle whilst unfit through drugs.
  • Attempt to drive a motor vehicle with a proportion of a specified controlled drug above the specified limit.
  • Drive a vehicle whilst drunk/ under the influence of drink/ drugs/ other intoxicating substances at Bristol Airport.
