2022/25016 - Facial Recognition Technology
REQUEST
Please provide the following information about your force’s use of overt facial recognition technology in mobile devices also known as Operator Initiated Facial Recognition (OIFR), since December 2021; if you do not hold this information for the whole length of the period stated above, please provide it for the period starting from the date you began recording the information:
- The number of times OIFR was used.
- The following information about each search: which Image Reference Database was searched (Custody images, Missing Persons or both), date, reason for facial scanning (grounds), officer defined ethnicity, self-defined ethnicity, gender of the person being scanned, age of the person scanned, search location, response (i.e., whether the search returned a match or no match. If so, please specify which database provided a match) and outcome (i.e., whether the use of OIFR generated an arrest, fixed penalty notice, report for summons, non-criminal disposal, no further action, missing person confirmed, subject made off).
- If during the use of OIFR any other databases were searched: the Police National Computer (PNC), the Police [IDENT1], the Immigration [IABS]) or all three.
- Any records documenting the rate of false positives and false negatives.
- Provide the Equality Impact Assessment for OIFR.
- How many times was Command & Control contacted following a search.
RESPONSE
We can confirm that the Operator Initiated Facial Recognition app is not used within Gwent Police due to technical issues.
