To provide the data requested we have checked arrested data for the years May 2019 to April 2022 for the relevant offences. This search returned a total of 329 arrests for the offences ‘Possess article with blade/sharply pointed article on school premises’, ‘Possess knife/blade sharp pointed article in a public place’ and ‘Threaten a person with a blade/sharply pointed article in public place’ for the time period requested.
The number of arrests is based on custody footfall, this means each time someone checks into custody they will only be counted once. Therefore, if they have been arrested for multiple offences they will only be counted once. An arrest may come any length of time after the offence was reported so may be in different years. This does mean that the recorded knife crimes (questions three and four) and custody data cannot be directly compared.

The number of charges is based on the number of arrests for a knife crime that led to a charge disposal. This is based on footfall so a person may be charged for multiple offences at one time, and this will count as one charge. This data can be compared to question one but NOT question three or four.
Please note that charge disposals can be added any time after the arrest and that some arrests may still be under investigation. These figures are accurate as of the 6th of June 2022.
