In conjunction with online safety specialists at the South West Grid for Learning (SWGfL), we are looking at voluntary and statutory sector responses to online and technology-facilitated abuse.
As part of this research, under the Freedom of Information Act (2000) we are requesting information held by UK police forces regarding:
Firstly, we would like to establish how many reported i.) incidents ii.) charges and iii.) convictions for image-based abuse (Section 33 of the Criminal Justice and Court Act 2015) have been recorded by your force for the years listed individually below?
This would be for the years 2015-2022:
Secondly, what training have officers and frontline staff in your force received regarding online and technology facilitated abuse during the past 5 years?
Please provide i.) number of staff trained per year, including a breakdown by rank/category of staff receiving this training per year ii.) the name and content of the training course(s) provided per year.
This would be individually for the years 2018-2022:
Please note that the software for recorded crime only provides data from 2017, therefore the data we have provided is based on January 2017 to 30th of August 2022.
The table below provides the number of records for the offence ‘Disclose private sexual photographs and films with intent to cause distress’ for the years 2017 to 30th of August 2022.
The custody data for ‘Disclose private sexual photographs and films with intent to cause distress’ is a separate data source that cannot be directly linked to the offences above. Instead, we have provided the outcomes to the occurrences counted above – this means that outcome of the investigation for each offence this is not the same as the total number of arrests or charges as multiple people could be arrested/charged for the same occurrence. This would be a separate figure.
The data below is directly linked to the count above.
We cannot provide conviction data as the data belongs to the courts who issue the convictions. The number of convictions can be obtained from the courts
