Having previously worked as a trainee accountant, Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Nicola Brain started her policing career in 1996 when she joined South Wales Police as a special constable.
Five years later, Nicky joined Gwent Police as a PC and worked out of Tredegar. Following her probationary period, she wasted no time in realising her ambition of becoming a detective when she completed her trainee investigator qualification and became a detective constable.
Now with over 28 years of policing experience, Nicky has spent most of her career in varying detective roles and has used her knowledge and commitment to investigate a range of serious and complex crimes, specifically homicides and serious sexual offences.
During this time, she has worked in specialist departments including Major Crime, the Professional Standards Department and the Rape and Serious Sexual Offences team, and became Gwent Police’s head of Crime in May 2019.
An experienced senior investigating officer (SIO), negotiator and sexual offences liaison officer, Nicky was appointed as ACC for Gwent Police in April 2024.
