We received a report of an assault near Maesglas Crescent, Newport, at around 10pm on Wednesday 27 May.
Officers attended, along with paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service, and a 32-year-old man was taken to hospital for treatment to injuries to his arm and leg.
A 31-year-old man from the Cwmcarn area was arrested on suspicion of a section 18 assault and he remains in custody as enquiries continue.
Chief Superintendent John Davies said:
“Our officers will be conducting enquiries in the area following the report of this assault so it is possible that you could see an additional police presence in this part of Newport.
“While this is an isolated incident and there is no further threat to the public, we understand that this matter might prompt concern from members of our communities.
“So we would ask anyone with concerns, or importantly information about this assault, to speak to our officers or you can also alternatively contact us in the usual way."
Officers were also assisted by colleagues from the National Police Air Service (NPAS).
Enquiries continue, and anyone with information is asked to call 101, visit our website or send us a direct message on social media, quoting log reference 2600165969.
