We’ll never stop working to make your community and your streets safer for everyone. Here’s a quick roundup of everything we’re doing, everything we’ve delivered, on your streets, in your community.
We’ve recently secured £746,702 of additional funding to use to address anti-social behaviour and related crimes in Alway in Newport, Blackwood, Brynmawr, Caldicot, Cwmbran and Tredegar.
In April 2021, the police and crime commissioner for Gwent received nearly £700,000 from the Home Office. We used this funding to prevent burglary, robbery and theft in Pillgwenlly in Newport, and Rhymney in Caerphilly.
We’ve supported residents to help make their homes more secure.
We’ve funded the installation of home security improvements at properties identified as being vulnerable to crimes like burglary.
We’ve held drop-in events where we've given out free crime prevention and property marking kits to help residents protect their valuable belongings.
We’ve worked with businesses and second-hand retailers to deliver property marking equipment and training so that stolen property can be easily identified and returned to its owner. This also helps to prosecute those who commit these kinds of crime.
We’ve worked with local councils to install additional CCTV cameras, street lighting and lighting bollards at key locations.
We’ve set up a Safe Space business scheme in Abergavenny and Newport for local businesses. This helps them to provide places of safety for women and girls who may feel unsafe.
We’ve supported local organisations such as the Tin-Shed Theatre Company in Newport, Ambika Social in Linda Vista Gardens, Abergavenny and the Friends of Bailey Park who are also based in Abergavenny. These organisations have a passion for creating safe and welcoming spaces for their communities and work locally to achieve this.
An educational programme has been provided to schools, universities and youth groups to help change unacceptable attitudes and behaviours towards women and girls and provide safety advice and encourage the reporting of crime.
We’ve provided fitness and wellbeing classes to build confidence for women and girls.
We’ve worked with Newport City Council and Newport NOW to employ two night-time ambassadors in the city centre and Stow Hill. They’re helping to reassure people and working with police to help keep people safe at night.
We’ve funded the creation of a colourful mural in Pillgwenlly to celebrate the diverse and vibrant community in the area. This mural will help create a sense of ownership and pride in the area.
We’ve worked with partners to remove graffiti and cut back overgrown foliage in areas where crime is more likely to occur. This improves the environment and also makes it more difficult for offenders to commit crime unseen.
