More than 240 arrests - and three jailed - as Operation Krypton tackles crime and ASB in Newport

We’ve now made 241 arrests as part of Operation Krypton, an intelligence-led partnership initiative focused on tackling crime and anti-social behaviour (ASB) across Newport.

Since launching at the beginning of July, we’ve worked with our partners, including Newport City Council and Hedyn, to improve safety in the city centre.

We’ve targeted repeat offenders, carried out drug warrants, disrupted criminal activity, recovered stolen vehicles and increased high-visibility patrols in areas affected by crime and disorder.

This proactive approach we've taken is part of our day-to-day activity in the city centre and our neighbourhood teams will continue to remain visible, accessible and focused on the issues that matter most to local people.

We've arrested 11 repeat offenders on at least two occasions as our officers have taken action against those causing the most harm in our communities.

Superintendent Esyr Jones, Neighbourhood Policing for Gwent, said:

“Our ongoing partnership work for Operation Krypton has resulted in 241 arrests so far for a variety of offences, ranging from burglary and shoplifting to drugs supply and disorderly behaviour.

“Since July, we’ve detected 18 reported commercial burglaries in the city, while also recovering £9,000 criminal property, carrying out warrants, more than a dozen operations with partners, and addressing anti-social behaviour.

“Recent court outcomes include the imprisonment of Mohammed Salam and Nicole Clarke for burglary and theft offences committed in the city centre, and Sam Mulligan for theft."

These outcomes show the positive results Operation Krypton is delivering. However, our work doesn’t stop here.

"We remain fully committed to working with our partners and when we identify offences, including Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) breaches for street drinking and begging in the city centre, we will take appropriate action against those causing harm to our communities.”
